The two big talking points of the preseason is the swap of Kyrie Irving to the Celtics from Cleveland with Isaiah Thomas going in the opposite direction, and how will Billy Donovan manage the Oklahoma City Thunder? The signing of Carmelo Anthony has made the Oklahoma starting five, individually one of the best in the NBA and it will be interesting to see how competitive they can be against the Golden State Warriors. They will need to be willing to share the ball and create a chemistry in the squad similar of what the GSW have created throughout the past four years.
Recently Dwayne Wade has parted ways with the Chicago Bulls, he is now on the Cleveland Cavaliers roster taking a pay cut to try and fight for a fourth NBA Championship.
As well as the usual big name players, we have some interesting Rookies competing, the 2016 No1 draft pick Ben Simmons (LSU) will be lining up with the Philadelphia 76ers. After an injury plagued 2016/2017 campaign Simmons will be looking to kick of the season in style and play an important role in the development of the 76ers.
Another rookie to look out for is Lonzo Ball (UCLA) of the LA Lakers – he looks to be a talented point guard with amazing all-round ability.
The biggest excitement of the season will be if OKC can gel, and if they do, can they compete with the formidable GSW in the West?
I can’t wait for the NBA to return. So let’s go ahead and take a look at tips for the season ahead.
NBA Predictions, Picks and Betting Tips for the 2017/18 Season
NBA Western Conference Winner Prediction
Golden State Warriors (7/20)
At these unimpressive odds its unlikely to have many backers. However, it is almost impossible to look past this Golden State Warriors outfit. With all the key stars looking fit as well as recently acquiring the signing rights from the Chicago Bulls for the impressive University of Oregon forward Jordan Bell, I can’t see any other teams in the conference beating GSW to the finals. At best odds of 14/1, the OKC Thunder could show some value, however, personally I would hold off until watching the first five games and seeing how the chemistry is within the squad.
Other potential teams that will be trying to accomplish the unimaginable, yet should all find themselves in the playoffs are the Houston Rockets (8/1), San Antonio Spurs (17/2), Oklahoma City Thunder (14/1) and Minnesota Timberwolves (33/1).
NBA Eastern Conference Winner Prediction
Cleveland Cavaliers (13/20)
After an impressive 2016/2017 campaign, I am backing the Cleveland Cavaliers to finish ahead of the Boston Celtics this season. The Celtics have an organized outfit with the experienced Al Horford leading the team and the addition of Kyrie Irving who will do everything in his power to finish above the Cavs. However, with the veterans in the Cavaliers roster, I see them being too strong for the Celtics when it comes to the playoffs. There haven’t been many fallouts between a franchise and a player in the NBA that were as chaotic as the split between Kyrie Irving and the Cleveland Cavaliers, it promises to be an intriguing matchup. It’s likely to be a matter of who can keep their best players fit but with the Cavs having some of the biggest names in the NBA on their roster and with plenty of experience on their side, I’m backing them to do the job.
NBA Championship Winner Prediction
Golden State Warriors (8/13)
The team to beat in the NBA, it will be a tough season as everyone else tries to knock them over. They will be pushed hard in the Eastern Conference by the Rockets, OKC and the Spurs but in the end, I’m picking them to be too strong. It will be the coaches job, Steve Kerr, to make sure they don’t get complacent. If he can do that, I don’t see the Cavs or Celtics getting close to them in the finals. If you’re after some value in the market, you could look at backing the Oklahoma City Thunder to win it all at odds of around 20/1.
NBA Regular Season MVP Pick
Kawhi Leonard (4/1)
The powerhouse that is Kawhi Leonard will continue his great form and lead the Spurs into the playoffs. He is a force in the circle with a build that makes him capable of scoring points from anywhere, he picks up valuable rebounds and steals time and time again. Kawhi will be the main player in the Spurs run to the playoffs, he will be leading the side every step of the way and will be the go-to-man for all of their big plays. He continues to become stronger with every passing season, and now more mature than ever. My pick for the regular season MVP. Kawhi Leonard is joint-favourite with Lebron James. I can see Lebron going very close as well, but I like the look of Kawhi Leonard. Some value could be Kyrie Irving at 16/1 playing a big role in the Celtics’ push for the Eastern Conference title. Or even a look at Carmelo Anthony 150/1. Carmelo will score heavily with OKC, but I question his consistency during the big moments. With a better team around him who knows, maybe worth a punt.
NBA Rookie of the Year Pick
Ben Simmons (11/4)
Perhaps my best bet to start off the 2017/18 season. After an injury crisis last season, I’m expecting Ben Simmons to play a big part in the improvement of the 76ers. During pre-season he has looked sharp, recording some impressive assists with plenty of minutes. Simmons is a player with incredible size and strength for a point-guard, he will cause plenty of mismatches on the court and be a handful for other point-guards to deal with. He recently guarded Kyrie Irving and was widely applauded for his efforts. I’m picking the 76ers to make a run for the playoffs during the regular season and this will help Ben Simmons chance of winning the rookie of the year title. With more minutes under his belt, I can only see him improving. Fingers crossed 76ers coach Brett Brown continues to give him plenty of opportunities. Lonzo Ball of the LA Lakers is a big danger to Simmons for this title, but I can see the big Australian point-guard having learnt a lot about the NBA on the sidelines last season, and this season I can see him taking that into his game.
Other NBA Betting Tips for the 2017/18 Season
Washington Wizards to Win the Division
Last season the Wizards finished six games ahead of the Atlanta Hawks in the Southeast Division. The other teams in this group (Heat, Hornets and Magic) have only got worse this season so John Wall and Bradley Beal should be able to comfortably lead a talented Washington team to the Southeastern title yet again.
Brooklyn Nets Over 27.5 Wins
This Brooklyn Nets bet may turn some heads but the Brooklyn Nets have been outstanding in preseason. Coach Kenny Atkinson has had one year to try and build a better squad that can compete at a higher level. I’m predicting the record for the Nets this season to be around the 31/51 mark. The starting five should look something like this; D’Angelo Russell, Jeremy Lin, DeMarre Carroll, Allen Crabbe and Timofey Mozgov. In my opinion, they will be good enough to get at least 28 wins throughout the regular season. With several new additions and located in the easier Eastern Conference I’m picking this bet to be a winner.
Detroit Pistons Over 38.5 Wins
After the Detroit Pistons finished the 16/17 season with a record of 37/45 and 10th in the Eastern Conference they will be looking to vastly improve on that and fight for one of the last places in the playoffs. I’m predicting the record this year for the Pistons to be somewhat around 44/38. Langston Gallaway and Avery Bradley are the main additions to the squad this season. Avery Bradley will likely play a key role and find a spot in the starting five together with the likes of Andre Drummond, Tobias Harris, Stanley Johnson, and Reggie Jackson. The squad has had mixed results during the preseason, however, I can see the Pistons improving on last season and getting over 38 wins throughout the regular season.
