Having both secured their place in the last-32 prior to this final match-day, the pressure is somewhat off for both teams. Winning the group would be ideal, but it’s felt that neither will be too displeased with going through in second. Based on what we’ve seen over the course of the group campaign, these are two of the strongest teams in the competition, and so both will likely fancy their chances against anyone in the knockouts.
Finishing as the runner-up in this group wouldn’t be the end of the world for either team, but both are still expected to have a go in this fixture. Going forward, the pair are more than capable of hurting any rear-guard and, with neither in any danger of being eliminated, a decent game is expected to unfold.
The first bet that stands out is ‘Over 2.5 Goals’. Over the course of the group, the attacking intent of both has been very clear. Neither Atalanta nor Lyon are the type to sit back and wait for something to happen. It is this forward-thinking attitude that should act as the catalyst for goals in this fixture.
Given their tendency to try and push forward, it’s no surprise that all of Atalanta’s matches have seen a fair amount of goals. Gian Piero Gasperini’s men have scored in all five of their matches in Group D, while they’ve also conceded in each of those five. ‘Over 2.5 Goals’ has landed in three. Similarly, three of Lyon’s five UEL matches this season have seen at least three goals go in, while they too have failed to score at no point.
When the pair met in the reverse fixture, the 1-1 score-line probably didn’t quite do the game justice. Chances were aplenty, especially for the hosts, and, in truth, further goals should’ve been scored. Lyon were guilty of missing numerous chances on that day, but Atalanta also went agonizingly close before they did eventually get on the score-sheet. Given what happened in that game, coupled with the fact that neither have defended all the impressively of late, both in this competition and domestically, it really is easy to see this turning out to be a game where the goals flow.
As things stand, Lyon haven’t conceded twice in Group D, but Atalanta have a decent chance of becoming the first team to breach the French outfit twice over the course of 90 minutes. Bruno Génésio’s men remain a force to be reckoned with going forward, but defensive cracks have started to appear of late. With Atalanta having scored at least twice in each of their two previous home matches in this group, it would be no surprise whatsoever if Lyon had to pick the ball out of their own net more than once in this fixture. Backing ‘Atalanta to Score Over 1.5 Goals’ also stands out.
