With these two sides in the bottom four coming into this match, it’s abundantly clear that this is going to be a key game for both sides, particularly the visitors, who will be in danger of getting cut adrift if they lose it. Neither side are playing with much confidence right now so it is likely to be a cagey affair, as all the recent meetings have been.
Wigan and Burton were battling with each other for promotion from League One last term and both were successful in that battle but it’s hard to see these two clubs both managing to stay afloat in the Second Tier. Burton come into this game having lost 6 of their last 7 matches. You have to go back to October for the last time they beat someone other than bottom club Rotherham and discounting games against a very poor Millers side, it’s just 2 points from 9 league games, which clearly needs to improve.
This is clearly one of their better opportunities to claim a priceless win but Wigan tend to employ a fairly cautious approach on their travels and Burton don’t really have the tools to break down what is a fairly stubborn Latics defence. The Brewers have scored just 1.04 goals per game this season and that is only marginally better at 1.08 when only taking into account their home games. They’ve failed to score in 33% of their matches at the Pirelli and that includes 3 of their last 5.
Wigan have the worst goal-scoring record in the division with only 0.80 goals per game. They’ve failed to score in a deeply worrying 52% of their Championship matches this season and those things offer further evidence towards this being a low-scoring contest. This is a game they’d love to win but certainly can’t afford to lose and caution could prevail. They tried to be a bit bolder at Rotherham just before Christmas but the plan backfired spectacularly as they let in three 1st Half goals. Since then they’ve reverted to a more defensive approach and it worked well as they got a good 0-0 draw at in-form Derby in their most recent away game.
They are unlikely to risk anything too bold here and that suggests we won’t see much goalmouth action at either end. Both teams have scored in only 42% of Burton home games and 40% of Wigan games overall in the Championship this season. Given that, there looks to be value in backing Both Teams to Score – NO at 4/5 here.
