This is one of the most interesting games this weekend in La Liga. From a neutral perspective, it would be great to see Atleti put a real winning run together and put some pressure on leaders Barcelona as right now it looks like we don’t really have a title race for the first time in many years. Victory here would give Atleti a real platform to do that but it won’t be easy against an Eibar side that are one of the division’s form teams.
Eibar continue to defy the odds. It’s not so long ago that pundits were talking openly about this being the season when the Basque miracle was set to come to an end. They were struggling at both ends of the pitch and looked in deep relegation trouble just two months ago. However a stunning run of 6 wins and a draw from their last 7 league games has seen them soar up the table and victory here could see the minnows rise as high as 5th place.
Therefore this will be a genuine test for Atleti, who are without Diego Costa following his red card last weekend. They could really have done with his presence up top against a physical Eibar side but Atleti do have a good record at Ipurua, so will fancy they can still get the job done.
It’s a game that has the potential to deliver goals at both ends. Eibar have been scoring for fun at home in recent weeks. They’ve fired in 16 goals in their last 5 home league games alone. The likes of Joan Jordán and Takashi Inui have really caught the eye with some enterprising midfield displays, while Charles will ensure this is anything but an easy day for Atleti’s back four.
However at the other end, the trickery of Antoine Griezmann could make all the difference. He’s not had his best season in an Atleti shirt but with 5 goals in his last 8 appearances there are signs that the Frenchman is coming into form and backing Griezmann to score anytime could be worth considering here.
Overall going for Both Teams to Score looks to offer value. 5 of Eibar’s last 6 home games have produced goals at both ends and they are certainly playing well enough in the final third to grab a goal in this game, even against such a strong Atleti defence.
