In truth, qualification to the knockout rounds is unlikely as far as Lugano are concerned. The Swiss are not strictly out of the running, but they would need to win here and hope that Plzen are well beaten by Hapoel. Thursday’s visitors haven’t performed too badly, but defensive weakness and perhaps naivety in terms of their tactics have contributed to them falling slightly short of the mark. In contrast, FCSB have massively impressed. Having won each of their first three matches, the Romanians stormed into the lead in Group G, and, even though they’re without a win in two, they’re already safely through to the next phase.
Lugano’s chances of making it through are indeed slim, but they’re not expected to come into this fixture and sit back in disappointment, oh no. As an attack-minded team, Pierluigi Tami’s men will go to Bucharest and get forward, especially since they’re facing a team who have little to play for. However, as has often been the case, such attacking tactics could go against the Swiss. ‘FCSB to Win & Over 2.5 Goals’ is the bet that stands out.
As their results go someway to show, Lugano are a team who favour getting forward. The Swiss side aren’t the sort of team to sit back, and, in truth, such tactics should be applauded, even if they are perhaps naïve in some cases. Even away from home Lugano have opted to play an open game, and, considering that they need to score goals in this fixture, their approach is unlikely to alter now. As they’ve scored in both of their away matches in Group G, there has been little wrong with the attacking efforts of Tami’s side; however, from a defensive point of view, they’ve struggled massively. Conceding six goals in two away matches doesn’t bode well. ‘Over 2.5 Goals’ has landed in each of their travelling fixtures in this group, as well as in four of their five overall. Unfortunately for them, Lugano have been on the wrong end of three of those results.
Just as they did in southern Switzerland, FCSB will fancy themselves to capitalise on Lugano’s open approach. They too have struggled to keep teams out, but it’s fair to say that they’ve offered far more going forward, especially on their own patch. With the visiting side likely to push forward, the likely group winners can take advantage on the break.
