Rangers are in action on Saturday afternoon, as they face non-league side Fraserburgh. It’s a complete mismatch on paper, but this is obviously one of the big reasons why people love cup football. However, is there any chance of an upset of putting the Gers out of the Scottish Cup at the first hurdle? The visitors are massive favourites heading in to this tie, and it’s not hard to see why.
Graeme Murty hasn’t enjoyed the greatest start to life as Rangers boss, as he struggles to get any consistency from his new side. The fact that he was very clearly burdened with the job after no credible candidate came forward has hardly done much for his chances of winning over the players. However, given the money the Ibrox side spent in the summer, the visitors really need to start improving. Their best chance to do that is by stopping Celtic from landing another domestic trophy.
With the league title long gone, Rangers’ best hope of success this term is the Scottish Cup. Facing the team ranked second in the Highland League shows how far the Gers have to go to lift this trophy, but it’s a good way to start. While the home side are in good form, there’s little to suggest that they can bridge the gap to their Premiership opponents. They may have won eight of their last nine home matches, but they’re playing at a very different level to Rangers.
On top of that, the Gers have been in fantastic form on their travels this season. They have won more games on the road than they have at Ibrox, with their home form holding them back. They’d probably be happy if they kept getting away ties right the way through to the semi-finals. Having won seven and drawn two of their away trips this term – averaging 2.09 goals per game – the visitors should have far too much in their locker for Fraserburgh.
We can’t see the hosts having the required quality to trouble top flight opposition, and we’re backing them to be outclassed in this clash. We’re going for Rangers to keep a clean sheet in the Fourth Round, and walk away with a comfortable victory. An away win to nil is our match tip here, while we’re also backing a 3-0 victory for the Gers.
