Guingamp have managed a bit of a resurgence over the past couple of months, and their most recent three match unbeaten streak has put a comfortable cushion between them and Ligue 1’s relegation zone.
They have beaten Saint-Etienne and Reims and drawn with Montpellier to open up a six point gap between them and Gazelec Ajaccio in the first of the relegation places. A win on Saturday could take them as high as 12th in the table, ahead of the likes of Marseille and Bordeaux.
A win against Paris Saint Germain could be a tall order though. The reigning Ligue 1 champions will be hurting a bit after letting a first leg Champions League lead slip through their fingers on Tuesday. They came back from a goal behind against Manchester City to lead 2-1 going into the final 20 minutes, but an equaliser from Fernandinho has put their hopes of making it to the semi finals in jeopardy.
They now need to go to the Etihad and either get a 3-3 or higher draw or a win to progress. This could be good news or bad news for Guingamp. They will either come out all guns blazing looking to boost their confidence with a big win, or they could rest their key players in preparation for next weeks trip to Manchester.
But even a second string Paris Saint Germain team is a formidable opponent. They have won ten of their last 11 matches on the road and are a huge 25 points ahead of their closest rivals in Ligue 1.
Guingamp may be in decent form but they haven’t really had any particularly difficult fixtures. Their last really tough opponents were Lyon, who proceeded to beat them 5-1. This makes odds of 21/20 for a Paris Saint Germain win look incredibly good value for money, and I’m backing that along with a 3-1 correct score prediction at 16/1.
