Ipswich’s play-off hopes took a blow at the weekend as they drew at home to Sheffield United, while 6th placed Middlesbrough won. They now have 9 points to make up on the top six and they really need to win this game, which they have in hand on several of the sides above them.
In truth Ipswich are little more than a long shot to make the play-offs but it’s a little surprising that the bookies only make them slight favourites here, with home advantage against struggling opponents. Hull come into this game on the back of four straight home matches and a return of 7 points from those games has helped them build up a bit of a cushion on the drop-zone.
Victory here for the Tigers and they really would be looking comfortable and overall they do have a bit more quality than some of the sides below them. However it’s hard to fancy them as they finally play an away match again here. They average just 0.65 points per game on their travels this term with 59% of their road games ending in defeat.
Only Birmingham have picked up fewer away points this season than Hull City and overall Ipswich certainly look the side more likely to come out on top here. The Tractor Boys have been in good form overall with 7 points from their last 3 league games and they’ve rarely slipped up against sides at the bottom end of the league.
Since losing the first East Anglian derby of the season back in October, Ipswich have not lost a league match against anyone outside of the current top six. They’ve appeared short on the quality needed to really trouble the best sides but against everyone else, they’ve been consistent and tough to beat.
A lack of goals has been a bit of a concern of late but this Hull defence is unconvincing and Ipswich won’t need to produce moments of magic to create chances. The Tigers have just a 22% clean sheet ratio in the league and it’s unlikely we’ll see a repeat of the weekend, where Ipswich couldn’t find a breakthrough against Sheffield United.
Overall backing Ipswich to Win looks the smart bet here with the bookies struggling to decide upon a favourite for this game.
Going for a 1-0 Ipswich Win might be the best move in the Correct Score market as matches at Portman Road of late have tended to be very low-scoring.
