Juventus’ International Champions Cup campaign didn’t exactly go the way they had envisaged on Saturday, with Melbourne Victory proving tough to break down in the opening stages of the match. Juventus made the breakthrough 15 minutes after half time though, but Victory responded with an 83rd minute equaliser and then won the tie on penalties.
Admittedly the Juventus squad is light of first team players due to the majority of them being involved in Euro 2016, but they really would have expected to beat the Australian side on Saturday.
In all honesty it looked like Juventus simply underestimated their opposition, but they are unlikely to make the same mistake with a club as big as Spurs. The draw in Melbourne made it two draws and nine wins in their last 11 outings in a run of form which saw them win both Serie A and the Coppa Italia by the end of the season.
Tottenham Hotspur’s last match was the absurd 5-1 defeat to Newcastle on the final day of the season. This came after they surrendered their Premier League title challenge in the closing weeks of the season, winning just two of their final seven matches and losing twice.
This wasn’t the same team we saw for the majority of the season though. It was simply a case of them crumbling under the pressure against West Brom and Chelsea, and then resigning themselves to defeat in the final two games of the season.
Both of these clubs are missing key players due to their involvement in Euro 2016. Juventus have an entirely second string back line and goalkeeper, and it showed as they conceded against Melbourne Victory. A few midfield mainstays are out too, whilst Spurs are without their key defenders and goalkeeper too. They are also missing Harry Kane and Dele Alli, but Christian Eriksen still provides a world class threat and new signing Victor Janssen will be keen to impress up front.
With both Juventus and Spurs missing key figures at the back I think a clean sheet for either team is unlikely, so I’m backing Both Teams to Score at 4/6 for my main prediction alongside a 2-1 win for Juventus at 9/1 for my correct score prediction.
