Melbourne Victory suffered a shock defeat on Wednesday as they let a one goal lead slip in New Zealand to lose 2-1 against bottom of the table Wellington Phoenix, with that match following on from a poor 1-1 draw at home to Central Coast Mariners as well.
Admittedly they were already all but out of the race for the top spot after their shocking start to the Hyundai A-League campaign, but they were hoping to close the gap on 2nd place with a win here but instead find themselves ten points adrift and down in 5th position. Also, they are only four points inside the playoff zone now.
Victory will be expecting to get back to winning ways here though, as they come up against a Perth Glory side who have collapsed over the last couple of weeks. Their 2-0 loss at home to Melbourne City makes it three defeats on the bounce, with them shipping 11 goals and scoring none during this period.
This leaves Glory down in 7th, but they would narrow the gap on the playoff zone to just a point with a win on Saturday. The fact that they have only won three of their last ten league matches indicates that three points might be a bit out of their reach though.
Away from home Perth Glory have won two, drawn one, and lost five of their eight league matches this season, and defensively they have been shocking at times. In fact, the 30 goals they have conceded this season is the highest tally in the A-League, and 20 of those have come away from home.
This is good news for Melbourne Victory, because their own chances of a clean sheet are slim as well. The hosts have failed to keep a clean sheet at home all season, but have scored in all but one of them and will feel confident of notching a few against Perth Glory, despite their rather poor record. Given the visitors’ recent struggles in front of goal we think a Melbourne Victory Win looks great value for money, so we’re backing that along with a 2-1 correct score predictions.
