Newcastle did what was expected of them last weekend as they beat Luton 3-1 in the FA Cup to progress to the next round, and the home fans will be hoping that this recent turnaround in form can continue and steer them away from a potential relegation battle in the Premier League.
That victory followed on from their 1-0 win away to Stoke on New Year’s Day to make it three wins from their last five matches, which is an incredible turnaround considering they had failed to win their previous nine matches and had lost eight of them.
That run has taken it’s toll on Newcastle though, who sit 13th in the table but just two points above the drop zone. They will feel confident of getting the three points on Saturday though as they come up against a Swansea side who prop up the Premier League table with just 16 points from their opening 22 games.
The Swans managed a goalless draw away to Championship leaders Wolves last weekend, and whilst they do look slightly improved under Carlos Carvalhal, they have still won just one of their last seven in all competitions.
Most worrying is their lack of attacking ambitions. They have scored just 13 league goals this season and have failed to find the net in eight of their last 13 competitive outings, and they come up against a Newcastle side who have only conceded two goals in their last four competitive matches.
Admittedly The Magpies haven’t been the best on home soil this season, but their draw against Brighton ended their losing streak there and the St James Park faithfuls witnessed a comfortable win over Luton last weekend. That should buoy their confidence a bit, and considering Swansea have lost seven of their last eight trips away in the league, backing a Newcastle win looks a good choice. Swansea’s lack of attacking prospects means this is unlikely to be a high scoring game too, and with just three of Newcastle’s last eight at home seeing three or more goals we’re also opting for a Newcastle Win and Under 2.5 Goals alongside a 2-0 correct score predictions.
Ayoze Perez looks a good bet to get on the scoresheet too. Newcastle have struggled to find a reliable frontman this season, but Perez has scored three goals in his last two outings so looks the most likely candidate in front of goal.
