PSG returned to action with a vengeance after their winter break on Saturday. Goals from seven separate players, including debutant Julian Draxler, led PSG to a 7-0 hammering of Bastia in the Coupe de France.
This, along with their Coupe de la Ligue campaign and the looming Champions League tie with Barcelona, leaves them well in the running for every competition they’re involved in, despite what many have considered to be a very sub-standard first half to the season.
They battered Lorient 5-0 in the final Ligue 1 game before the winter break, and that victory leaves them 3rd in the table with five points separating them from the high flying Nice. They have suffered some shock results recently though with a draw against Ludogorets and defeats at Montpeller and Guingamp making it three wins, two draws, and two defeats in their last seven competitive matches.
In terms of the team they might field on Wednesday it’s likely to be a bit more youthful than their standard Ligue 1 starting 11. 18 year old Jean-Kevin Augustin led the line for them in their 3-1 win over Lille in the last Coupe de la Ligue, whilst Jese also made a rare start and the midfield trio was made up of Marco Verratti, Gregorz Krychowiak, and Christopher Nkunku. I would expect more of the same, although Julian Draxler could play again after netting on his debut and fellow newboy Giovani Lo Celso could also be in the team.
In terms of the goalscorers, I think Lucas Moura is the best net in the absence of top scorer Edinson Cavani. The Brazilian winger has bagged six Ligue 1 goals this season and scored again on Saturday. He also bagged two in the Coupe de la Ligue win over Lille, so he looks the best choice for our anytime goalscorer predictions.
Metz’ Coupe de France stay turned out to be short-lived as two second half goal saw them resigned to a 2-0 defeat at Lille on Sunday. This made it eight matches on the bounce without a win in normal time, with their only respite being the penalty victory over Toulouse in the Coupe de la Ligue.
Away from home they have lost four on the bounce now and have only won one of their last eight in normal time. In these eight games they have failed to score in six of them and conceded in all of them, including 11 in their last four.
Obviously PSG are huge favourites in this one for good reason, and I definitely expect them to win. I’m also expecting a clean sheet from them, considering they haven’t conceded in their last three home games and they’re facing a Metz side who have scored a total of eight goals in their 12 away days this season. This includes eight failures to score as well, so odds of 5/6 for a PSG Win to Nil look good value. I’m going for a 3-0 correct score predictions too at 6/1.
