Derby have long been Sheffield Wednesday’s bogey side and although they did finally end their barren run against the Rams in this fixture last season, it may well be a case of normal service resumed here with Derby playing much the better football right now and pushing for promotion.
It’s difficult to know how to reflect on Sheffield Wednesday this term. One perspective is that they’ve simply had far too many injuries to allow them to compete at the same level they reached last season and the season before. Another might be that Carlos Carvalhal’s tactical approach was finally figured out by opposing managers and so far his successor Jos Luhukay has also failed to find the right solution.
Either way, the Owls recent record in the league makes for pretty dire reading. They’ve won only 1 of their last 15 Championship games and while they still hold a 6 point advantage on the relegation zone, that could change very quickly, with this game starting a run of four matches which sees them face three top six sides and also travel to the Den, where Millwall are very strong. On current form you wouldn’t back them to win any of those games and the Owls have scored just twice in five league games under their new boss so far.
Therefore Derby will take plenty of encouragement from that as well as their strong record against Wednesday over the past decade or so. Gary Rowett’s side lost 2nd place to Aston Villa at the weekend but they can reclaim it here as they look to extend a 12 match unbeaten streak in the Championship.
The Rams have been very good travellers this season. They’ve lost just twice away from Pride Park in the league and have taken 1.8 points per away game on average, the 2nd best record in the Championship. With Wednesday struggling badly, going for an Away Win looks like the smart bet here.
In addition backing Matej Vydra to score anytime is worth a flutter. The Derby frontman has fired in 17 Championship goals this term, more than any other player and has scored in each of his last two matches.
Backing Derby & Both Teams to Score could also be worth considering. Both teams have scored in 60% of their away games this term and in 67% of Wednesday home games.
