Watford managed to get revenge on Bristol City last weekend, hammering them 3-0 in the FA Cup, to make amends for their League Cup exit at the hands of the Championship side. Now they will be looking to carry that form into the Premier League as they try to find their feet again after a difficult festive period.
The Hornets have only won one of their last nine matches in the league, and after their excellent start to the season, this has seen them slump to 10th in the table and just five points above the drop zone. If they don’t turn their form around in the league soon they could well find themselves in another relegation battle.
It’s clear where Watford’s problems lie. They have scored an impressive 31 goals so far this season, but have shipped 40 at the other end, a tally that is only beaten by Stoke. They have conceded in each of their last nine league matches, scoring themselves in seven of them but with their attackers rarely able to make up for the problems at the back.
Southampton aren’t exactly a free scoring side though, and they are in a spot of bother themselves in terms of league position. They sit 17th in the table and are only outside the drop zone on goal difference, and they come into this match having failed to win their last nine games in the league. The Saints did manage to get a win in the FA Cup last weekend, but their league form is a real worry and the departure of Virgil van Dijk leaves them short at the back as well as going forward.
In fairness, they have actually improved over the last couple of months going forward. They have only failed to score in two of their last ten in the league, but equally have struggled at the back and only have one clean sheet to their name in that period.
Given Watford’s struggles at the back this season, and the fact they have only kept two clean sheets at home all campaign, backing Both Teams to Score looks the best option for this game. Along with that we’re also expecting a stalemate between two teams who can’t seem to buy a win at the moment, so we’re backing a draw along with a 1-1 correct score predictions.
