Wellington Phoenix ended their dismal seven match winless streak in dramatic fashion on Wednesday, as they came from a goal behind to beat the in form Melbourne Victory 2-1 at home. They will now be hoping that this can build confidence within a squad depleted of it, but they have a long way to go yet.
Phoenix remain rock bottom of the Hyundai A-League, having collected just ten points from 14 matches so far. They are only three points behind Brisbane Roar now though, which means they could potentially move up to 9th if they take advantage of their game in hand over them.
Unsurprisingly for a side who need to travel over 1,000 miles for their away games, most of their limited success this season has come on home soil. They have picked up eight of their ten points in New Zealand, winning two, drawing two, and losing three of their seven matches.
Phoenix’ major issue this season has been their defence, which has conceded 27 times. This includes a huge 18 goals at home, although they have scored 15 times at the other end at the Westpac Stadium and haven’t failed to score in a single one of their home games. Unfortunately for them, they are yet to keep a clean sheet there as well.
This will be something that Western Sydney Wanderers are very aware of. The visitors drew with Adelaide United on Wednesday to make it three wins, one draw, and one defeat from their last five league matches. This leaves the visitors two points inside the playoff zone with a game in hand, and if they take advantage of this game in hand, they could move up to 4th.
Away from home the Wanderers have only won two of their eight matches though, drawing four times and losing the other two. They have only kept two clean sheets, but have found the net themselves in six of these matches.
Given both teams’ inability to keep clean sheets, and the fact that Phoenix have seen three or more goals in each of their last six home games, backing Over 2.5 Goals and Both Teams to Score looks the most promising option here alongside a 2-2 correct score predictions. We’re also backing Andrija Kaluderovic to score for the hosts. The Serbian striker has scored eight goals for Phoenix this season, and seven of those have come in their seven home games, so he looks a great value option.
