With the long format of best of 11 frames right up until the final, which is a long, best of 19, this tournament should favour the top ranked players. Looking back at the past winners reads like a who’s who of snooker, with only the well known players taking the glory. This should come as no surprise as we are now approximately half way through the season and the players should be hitting their top gear. 11 of the 40 times (27.5%) the winner of this has gone on the win the World Championship in the same season. So for these reasons three selections will be given, two favourites and one value pick. The selected players have all won a ranking tournaments already this season and have vast experience of this major championship.
‘The Rocket’ has the second highest win percentage of the season so far (83%), his form has seen him win two events, get to the final of two and the quarter final of two. The 5 times champion will be chasing the impressive record haul of 6 by Steve Davis all in the 80’s. O’Sullivan now stands as the games second most decorated player on 30 ranking event wins, only 6 away from the legendary Stephen Hendry and only one behind Hendry’s triple crown tournament wins of 18.
[Season form – 25 wins from 30 games this season]
“The Jester from Leicester” is the defending champion here and as with all our other selections is a multiple winner of this event. The world champion is still well clear in the rankings as the games current number one. Selby will be looking to add to his only ranking win so far this season (International Championship) and is probably due one, having won 5 events last season!
[Season form – 23 wins from 31 games this season]
“The Welsh Potting Machine” is a ridiculously good price here given that statistically he has the highest match win percentage of the season so far 84%. Williams has shown incredible consistency in reaching the quarter final or better in 8 of the 10 events he has played in this season. The two times world champion showed in the latest ranking event he can still deliver the championships, winning the Ireland Open. He also has a great record here having previously won it twice.
[Season form – 38 wins from 45 games this season]
