Day 3 Tips
York - 1:55pmFirst Race Special Handicap
Although inconsistent this season for Ed Dunlop, this lightly raced four year old clearly benefited from the gelding operation which occurred prior to his latest start. He came home with a purpose to win that race at Newmarket and has only been raised four pounds which looks extremely generous as he’s still very much unexposed after only six runs. Paul Mulrennan takes the ride and he looks set for a big run.
York - 2:25pmLonsdale Cup
The Queen’s horse was a brilliant winner of the Hardwicke Stakes at Royal Ascot in 2016 and he returned this season to swoop on by to win the Yorkshire Cup on seasonal debut. He tried to defend his crown in the Hardwicke Stakes on his latest start where he was fourth, hinting that he needed further and he gets that today under the ever brilliant Ryan Moore. Conditions will be fine and he should take all the beating as he’s unexposed as a stayer.
York - 3:00pmCity Of York Stakes
David O’Meara saves his best for the Ebor Festival and this six year old arrives here in good form. He’s been slowly building up to a big run, last seen at Glorious Goodwood in the Lennox Stakes where he was third, unlucky in the run when blocked at a crucial stage. If building on that performance like he has been doing all season he should be tough to beat here, as he’s proven at this level and runs well at York in the main.
York - 3:35pmNunthorpe Stakes
This is potentially the race of the meeting with Lady Aurelia taking on Battaash, with preference for the latter. Trained by Clive Cox, his improvement this season has been remarkable. He won a Listed race on his return before taking a Group 3 in tremendous style. He posted a career best on his latest start when winning the Group 2 King George at Glorious Goodwood, showing a frightening turn of foot to shoot clear. He is more than worth his place at this level and the race will be set up to suit, as he can sit off the strong pace that Lady Aurelia sets before shooting on by under Jim Crowley.
