Premier League of Darts – Night Three in Newcastle
The third night of the 2018 Premier League of Darts takes place on February 15th, as the best darts players in the world visit Newcastle for more top-class tungsten action. Last week, Simon Whitlock recorded his second victory of the competition with a convincing win over Rob Cross, whilst Michael Smith also won to move into second place in the table. Over the weekend, most of the players have been involved with qualifying for the UK Open in Wigan where Gary Anderson was amongst the winners in three days of play.

Mensur Suljovic vs Michael Smith19:15
The opening game of the night sees Mensur Suljovic play Michael Smith, and despite being at opposite ends of the early Premier League table, the bookies are finding it hard to split the pair. Suljovic has played well in defeat in his first two games, averaging over 100 in both matches, but ultimately losing 7-5 on both occasions. Meanwhile, Smith has picked up victories against Anderson and Gurney to have a 100% record coming into week three. Smith has also been performing well in the UK Open qualifiers, and has qualified for the tournament as second seed behind Michael van Gerwen. This has the potential to be a close game, but at the odds, slight preference is for the big-hitting Smith to come out on top.

Daryl Gurney vs Gerwyn Price19:50
The second match of the evening is between two players with just one Premier League point to their names after two weeks of play; last week Daryl Gurney lost to Smith whilst Gerwyn Price succumbed to Anderson. Gurney’s performance last week did give cause for some optimism, he averaged over 100, and then reached the final of the UK Open qualifier on Sunday. Three early defeats for Price in Wigan won’t help the Welshman’s confidence and ‘Superchin’ could add to the pressure here. However, at marginally shorter odds, the safer play may be to back Gurney in the most 180’s market. Gurney is arguably the most prolific maximum hitter in the Premier League this year, whilst Price has hit just four in his two matches so far.

Peter Wright vs Rob Cross20:25
The third match of the night sees Peter Wright take on Rob Cross. Wright comes into this match with three points from his two matches following victory over van Gerwen in Cardiff last week. At the weekend, Wright made the semi-finals on two of the three days, so is clearly in good form. Cross made an awful start to his debut season in the Premier League, winning just three legs and collecting no points in his matches against van Gerwen and Whitlock. However, there were signs that Cross was getting back to his best at the weekend, reaching two semi-finals and a final over the three days of action (he lost to the eventual winner on all three occasions). It may have taken him a while to adjust to the Premier League, but those encouraging performances in Wigan can kickstart the season for Cross, and he can build on that and win a close encounter here.

Gary Anderson vs Michael van Gerwen21:00
Next up, and Gary Anderson faces Michael van Gerwen in the big game of the night. Coming into this, and both players have won one and lost one of their opening two games in the Premier League. Anderson followed up victory last week by winning the UK Open qualifier on Friday, although he then failed to win a game on the Saturday and Sunday. Having already secured a place at the UK Open, van Gerwen didn’t play in Wigan, but will still go into the UK Open as number one seed, thanks to a fine display in his first three qualifiers. ‘Mighty Mike’ lost to Wright last week despite averaging over 100, and the expectation is that he will be fired up to bounce straight back against ‘The Flying Scotsman’ this week.
Free Betting Tip: Michael van Gerwen -2.5 Leg Handicap
Simon Whitlock vs Raymond van Barneveld21:35
The final game of the evening, and the surprise leader of the Premier League, Simon Whitlock, comes up against Raymond van Barneveld. Whitlock thrashed Cross 7-1 last week, although that was probably more down to a poor performance by Cross, than a great performance by the Australian. A couple of hours after that match, ‘Barney’ averaged over 100 in his defeat of Suljovic; anything near that average here should be enough to see the Dutchman pick up two more Premier League points.
