3rd TEST

After a stinging defeat at the hands of the tourists, Sri Lanka will be looking to avoid a whitewash at the hands of India in the third and final game of the series that will be played in Pallekele from August 12.
If the rout in the first match of the series wasn’t bad enough, Sri Lanka went down by an innings in the second game to India. There was a bit of a silver lining in that defeat though when the pair of Dimuth Karunaratne and Kusal Mendis hit centuries and were involved in a 191-run stand for the second wicket but by then the goose had been roasted for the hosts.
India’s win was comprehensive and set up by six scores of 50 or more in their first innings, including centuries from Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane. Then their bowlers ran through the Sri Lankan first innings, bowling them out for 183 before that small fightback from Sri Lanka in the second.
Ravindra Jadeja won himself a man-of-the-match award for his unbeaten 70 and seven wickets in the game but then he also won himself a suspension from the match referee. More on that below.

In the 40 Tests played between Sri Lanka and India, including two in this series, India lead the head to head 18-7. There have been 15 draws.
In Sri Lanka, the hosts have now lost four matches in a row to India and have a 7-8 win-loss record against the tourists.
Just five Test matches have been played at Pallekele, and Sri Lanka have won and lost one apiece with three ending in draws. The last time a Test was played here saw Sri Lanka get bowled out for 117 in the first innings against Australia and still come back to beat them 106 runs.

Sri Lanka will have to make a couple of forced changes to their line-up. Nuwan Pradeep suffered a hamstring injury and was ruled out of the rest of the previous Test and the series which allows Dushmantha Chameera a look-in. The tall fast bowler is six Tests old and has picked up 22 wickets in his career so far.
They have also got in medium pacer Lahiru Gamage, while having Lahiru Kumara and Vishwa Fernando, so one of these might also play.
The other change would be a replacement for Rangana Herath, which could be chinaman bowler Lakshan Sandakan.
India’s only change could come in the form of Ravindra Jadeja, who has been suspended from this third Test match by the ICC for throwing the ball dangerously at the batsman. Axar Patel walks into the squad but Kuldeep Yadav might get a chance in the XI ahead of the him.
The rest of the playing XI can be expected to remain the same.

The run machine in Cheteshwar Pujara has 301 runs in the series so far, making him the only player to breach the 300-run match. His Test match form, right from the start of the previous season in September 2016, has been exemplary, and with three centuries from the previous four Tests he looks to garner the runs again.
Pujara is 2/1 to score a century in the match and for a lower risk punt, he is 8/15 to score a fifty.
Jadeja is the leading wicket-taker in the series with 13 to his name but in his absence, the onus will be on R Ashwin who has 11 scalps of his own over these two matches. He has been the leader of the Indian bowling attack as well, with 93 sticks to his name over the last 15 Tests – a whopping six a game.
Ashwin is 7/4 to finish as the top wicket-taker in the Test.
