Reason for New England Patriots vs Tennessee Titans Betting tips

Many are saying that the Patriots got blessed with a double-bye as they face the Titans this week. It doesn’t look like much resistance is going to be put up by Tennessee against the defending champions, but it has been a crazy playoffs so far.

The Titans pulled a rabbit out of the hat last week as they came back from their 21-3 deficit to beat the Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium. Give the Titans credit for not abandoning their running game, but also you have to point out the shortcomings of the Chiefs in trying to close out the game. HC Andy Reid seemed to abandon the running game, and the defense seemed to be playing prevent defense the entire second half. No doubt the injury of TE Travis Kelce hurt the Chiefs offensive potential, but the conservative play-calling in the second half took the Chiefs out of their comfort zone and it allowed the Titans to sneak back into the game and eventually win it.

The comeback was led by RB Derrick Henry, who carried the rock 23 times for 6.8 yards per carry. Henry was able to stabilize the Titans offense in the second half and allowed QB Marcus Mariota to ease himself back into the game. Mariota played a solid game, and single-handedly got the Titans back in the game when he caught his own tipped pass for a touchdown in the third quarter. But the credit also has to be shared with the Titans defense, which pitched a shutout in the second half on the road. It was a very impressive comeback for a defense that was getting shredded in the first half.

New England will be very confident about their chances to return to the AFC Championship next week, but they do have a couple things to take care of. First of all, they have to stop the run. If they can contain Mariota, Henry, and DeMarco Murray (if he plays), then the Titans will have to rely on Mariota’s arm to carry them through, and that is certainly a risk Bill Belechick and the Pats are willing to take.

For the Titans, it is crucial to keep Mariota moving out of the pocket and to keep him involved with designed QB runs. The Patriots defense is always well prepared under DC Matt Patricia, but they do struggle a bit to contain dual-threat quarterbacks. If Mariota can balance making plays with his arm and legs, he could create some problems for an aging Patriots defense.

Even though the Patriots will win, we think the Titans will keep it within the total. The Patriots defense has been poor recently and has struggled all year to stop the run. Tennessee will most likely have both Henry and Murray for the game, and the added threat of Mariota gives them another capable runner. Look for the Titans to run the ball down the Pats’ throats and at least keep the game close.

We also like the under for the first half, as the Titans will try to play conservative to keep themselves from getting down early. They will run the ball and keep the clock running, and should be able to prevent scores from the Patriots on a couple of their drives. Lastly, we like RB Dion Lewis to score, as he has been a target monster since getting back from injury. Look for touches on not only on handoffs but also routes out of the backfield.
