Brazilian Atlético Mineiro welcome Peruvian club Melgar to their ground in Belo Horizonte for this Copa Libertadores group E match.  Atlético Mineiro currently lead their group with 10 points from 5 games, though they are only ahead of second place on goal difference and 2 points ahead of 3rd place, meaning they can’t afford to lose. Melgar meanwhile, are firmly rooted to the bottom of the group on 0 points and will do well to take anything from their remaining game.

Atletico Mineiro vs Melgar Predictions, Betting Tips and Match Previews

Reason For Atletico Mineiro vs Melgar Betting Tips

Atlético Mineiro will be looking to win their remaining game and score plenty of goals to ensure they have the best possible chance of topping the group and getting an easier challenge in the next round, currently only 1 goal separates them and 2nd place.  Their game of the group stages saw them see off Melgar, coming from a goal down to win 1-2 away from home; next up they hosted Independiente del Valle which they won 1-0, the goal coming in the 4th minute from forward Lucas Pratto. Their next match saw them play away to Colo Colo in a match that saw their goalkeeper make 5 saves and kept the score at 0-0, the return fixture saw Atlético comfortably beat Colo Colo 3-0. Finally, they played Independiente away which saw them lose for the first time so far, going a goal down within 6 minutes before equalising through Junior Urso 4 minutes later. The scoreline didn’t stay level for long however, as Indepediente scored twice more before half time and although Lucas Pratto pulled a goal back for the away side, the match finished 3-2.

FBC Melgar find themselves bottom of the group where even an unlikely win would not see them move anywhere above their current position, they will still be hoping to pull off an upset and pick up their first points of the campaign however.  They started their tournament a 1-2 loss to Atlético Mineiro before playing away to Colo Colo where they must have felt they could win a point. Having held on against the run of play and with their goalkeeper in fine form, they eventually conceded a goal in the 65th minute to Colo Colo’s Esteban Paredes. Next they hosted Independiente, managing an impressive 70% possession of the ball, they were unable to make this stat count however, conceding in the 36th minute and failing to score themselves, the game ending at 0-1. The return leg was not as positive, Melgar conceded in the 3rd minute and again the 47th, losing the game 2-0. Finally, they played Colo Colo at home, taking the lead for the first time in the tournament through forward Bernardo Nicolas Cuesta in the 49th minute. They managed to hold this lead until finally conceding in the 69th and then the 72nd minute, eventually losing the match 1-2.

Melgar are in woeful form of late, not winning in 11 and this is a hard away fixture at the best of times. Atletico are looking to wrap up qualification, something not possible for Melgar now, it is likely we will see goals in this one, and lots of them. Over 3.5 goals looks good value ahead of this one, as Atletico will look to improve both their points tally and goal difference. Melgar on the other hand will be trying to secure their first Copa points in this torrid debut appearance.

Head to Head

These two sides last met on the 17th of February in Peru where the home team took the advantage early on, Melgar’s Omar Fernandez netting in the 14th minute. The lead was short lived however as Atlético scored 2 goals before half time through Rafael Carioca and Patric, despite forcing the opposition goalkeeper into 4 saves, Melgar were unable to score again and lost the game 1-2.
