Reason For Czech Republic vs Lithuania Betting Tips
Czech Republic aren’t having the best of times at the moment. They were eliminated from the group stages in Euro 2016 after picking up just one point from their three group games, and shortly after the championships had finished Czech legends Petr Cech and Tomas Rosicky announced their retirement from international football.
This leaves them with a squad rather lacking in the quality department. They have plenty of international experience, but midfielder Borek Dockal is the highest scorer in the squad with just six goals in his 29 appearances. This is by no means a bad return for a midfielder, but the fact their three names strikers have just six goals between them from 20 combined appearances is a worry.
It’s no surprise then that they are struggling for goals at the moment. They managed a 3-0 win over Armenia in their first appearance after the Euros, but they then failed to score in their first three World Cup qualifiers, drawing against Northern Ireland and Azerbaijan and losing 3-0 to Germany. Since then they have beaten Norway 2-1 and drawn 1-1 with Denmark to give them a total of three goals in their last five appearances.
This leaves them 4th in their World Cup qualifying group, but with a trip to minnows San Marino coming up this weekend they will be expecting to boost their goalscoring confidence.
Lithuania’s last outing was a 4-0 defeat at Slovaki, but they have actually managed a fairly decent record in these World Cup qualifiers. They have beaten minnows Malta at home and picked up draws against both Slovenia and Scotland. In the build up to Euro 2016 they earned a goalless draw away to Poland as well, so they are definitely an improving side.
Goals are generally not their strong point though. Lithuania have scored just three goals in their last 14 away matches, but defensively they show signs of improvement and they will feel like they can keep a goalshy Czech Republic at bay for a while on Wednesday.
Six of Lithuania’s last nine away games have seen fewer than three goals, whilst half of Czech Republic’s last ten at home have also been low scoring affairs, including three of their last four. This makes odds of 1/1 for Under 2.5 Goals look a good value bet, so I’m backing that alongside a 1-0 win for Czech Republic at 4/1.
Head to Head
Czech Republic have won five and lost one of their six previous meetings with Lithuania.
Czech Republic Team News
Basel goalkeeper Tomas Vaclik is likely to start as Czech Republic come to terms with Petr Cech's retirement. This leaves Tomas Sivok in the back line as the most experienced international player, whilst midfielder Borek Dockal is the top scorer with six goals in 29 appearances. Milan Skoda will be the main man up front.
Lithuania Team News
Striker Fiodor Cernych will captain Lithuania, with his eight goals in 30 appearances making him the top scorer in the squad too. Defender Tadas Kijanskas is the most experienced player available to them, but every player in the squad has been capped at least once.
