Reason For Marseille vs Toulouse Betting Tips
Toulouse will travel east to Marseille for the first game of the new Ligue 1 season where both clubs will be looking to build on the progress made last season, or pick up the scraps in Toulouse’s case.
Last season Toulouse slumped to their lowest league finish since 1999 under manager Pascal Dupraz who was swiftly dismissed in January, with former player Mickaël Debève being given the task of keeping the club in the league – which he did, barely. Les Violets managed to finish 18th after some massive late-season wins against Troyes, Nice and Guingamp. They then went on to a play-off against Ajaccio, which they managed to win 4-0 over two legs. Now once again under Alain Casanova who managed to give the club some stability between 2008 and 2015, the fans will be hoping that the romantically named manager will be able to return them to the top half of France’s top tier.
In their four warm-up matches, they won two, drew one and lost one to make up a pretty satisfactory pre-season, which unfortunately left a bad taste in the mouth after losing 4-1 to Crystal Palace in their last game. Toulouse lost both matches to Marseille last season, but neither were absolute landslides and they will be looking for their new boys to help break the mould against les Olympiens.
Toulouse have made several attacking signings so far, including their top scorer last year Max Gradel who got eight crucial goals for them last season, including vital strikes in their wins at Nice and Angers. They have also signed Belgium U21 international Aaron Leya Iseka on a free, who could turn out to be a real bargain if he comes good. Toulouse did lose two real prospects in the summer though with Issa Diop joining West Ham and the highly-rated young goalkeeper Alban Lafont moving to Fiorentina. Despite being young, they were very much pivotal parts of their squad last year and will be hard to replace. The club has made the signing of Baptiste Reynet to go between the sticks but there still remains a large gap in the middle of defence which will need to be filled before it’s too late.
Marseille had a very quiet summer with only two signings, but both were quite expensive for the club. Young centre-back Duje Caleta-Car joined from Salzburg and will be looking to break into the ageing defensive partnership of Adil Rami and Rolando who are both 32. Caleta-Car enjoyed a good 2017-18 season with 28 performances in the league for Red Bull, which eventually got him a call up to the Croatia World Cup squad, although he played little part in the competition. This move will be massive in terms of his career and if he can solidify himself in the Marseille defence, then he will have a great career ahead of him.
Pre-season for Marseille wasn’t exactly a fun get-together as they only won one of their seven warmup games. A heavy loss to Bournemouth plus some disappointing defeats to Saint-Etienne and Ligue 2 Beziers means that the team definitely have something to bounce back from in this game. But Marseille have the experience and talent to do this, big personalities like Kostas Mitroglou and Adil Rami won’t allow the team to have another 2015/16 season where they finished 13th.
Despite a poor pre-season, we are going to back a narrow Marseille win in this one. Wins in all of their last five competitive home games, plus their excellent head-to-head record against les Violets means that les Olympiens will go into this match with the advantage, even though they haven’t been great so far in pre-season. Marseille scored in all but one of their warm-up games and conceded in each match and we think this trend will continue, with Toulouse getting seven goals in their four pre-season games.
Marseille Team News
Lucas Ocampos is still recovering from an ankle injury and Rolando from an achilles problem. With the latter sitting out, new centre-back Duje Caleta-Car should slot into the defence for his league debut.
Toulouse Team News
Quentin Boisgard will be a doubt after picking up a minor ankle injury at the end of last month, Firmin Ndombe Mubele may also miss out. 'Keeper Baptiste Reynet will be looking to make his league debut for the club since joining to replace Alban Lafont.
