Reason For Melbourne Victory vs Newcastle Jets Betting Tips
Melbourne Victory have currently played one more game than the league leaders Perth Glory and sit three points behind them in the A-League table, but that gap could double on Wednesday night when the table toppers face Sydney FC. All Melbourne Victory can do is cross their fingers and hope their title rivals slip up and pick up three points of their own at home to Newcastle Jets on Saturday. The visitors sit seventh in the table and haven’t won any of their last three matches in the A-League, and there are eleven points between the pair heading into this weekends clash.
Melbourne Victory just about managed to scrape past Western Sydney Wanderers last weekend, but on the balance of play the visitors probably didn’t even deserve a point from the game. Melbourne Victory took the lead against the run of play moments before the half time whistle through former Swedish international Toivonen. Western Sydney Wanderers got themselves back into the match via a seventy-fourth minute spot kick from Baumjohann, and looked like they might go on to win the match from that point. However, with just four minutes remaining Melbourne Victory produced a rare attack which lead to a second goal for Toivonen and all three points for the visitors. The hosts ended the game with more of the possession, twice as many corners, and sixteen shots to their guests seven, but let themselves down in the final third.
Newcastle Jets started brightly away at Melbourne City on Sunday, taking the lead through O’Donovan after just four minutes. This proved to be a false dawn for the visitors though, as Vargas picked up his second yellow card of the match after twenty-five minutes, which then lead to McGree equalising for the hosts in the twenty-seventh minute. Melbourne City got themselves in front shortly after the hour mark through Brattan and while no more goals were scored, the hosts never looked like they would concede for the remainder of the match. Newcastle Jets were architects of their own downfall last weekend and need to become more resolute at the back if they are to start climbing the table again.
When Newcastle Jets played host to Melbourne City in November the teams produced just one goal between them in a game that won’t live long in the memory. Newcastle Jets created more chances to score, but Melbourne City had 55% of the overall possession during the ninety minutes and that control of the ball contributed towards Antonis’ winning goal for the visitors in the seventy-first minute. With four wins and two draws, Melbourne City are undefeated in their last six league games and head into Saturday’s match as the clear form favourites. Newcastle Jets have won two, drawn one, and lost three of their last six, and will need an improved performance to take anything from this weekends trip to Sydney. Toivonen is the home sides danger man in front of goal this season with seven A-League goals to his name, while O’Donovan and Vargas joint top score with three league goals each for Newcastle Jets, but the Venezuelan misses out on Saturday’s game through suspension.
We’re confident that both teams will score and that over 2.5 goals will be produced in Saturday’s game, and have backed Melbourne to win 2-1. Both teams have scored in each of Melbourne Victory’s last four matches, while three of the hosts last six matches have produced over 2.5 goals. Both teams have scored in each of Newcastle Jets’ last four matches, and each of those games have also produced over 2.5 goals.
Melbourne Victory Team News
Nick Ansell, Keisuke Honda, Jai Ingham, and Georg Niedermeier could all miss Saturday's game through injury.
Newcastle Jets Team News
Joseph Champness and Glen Moss are the only two injury concerns for the visitors this weekend, but Vargas is suspended.
