Reason For Union Berlin vs Stuttgart Betting Tips

Given that they’ve been competing at the level above their opponents, Stuttgart came into this play-off as firm favourites, though by getting at the Bundesliga side in the first leg, scoring twice and avoiding defeat in the process, Union Berlin showed that they’re not in this game just to make up the numbers. Urs Fischer’s men were excellent in the first leg, so much so that they ought to fancy themselves to do the business in front of their own fans on Monday evening.

In the first leg, Stuttgart played at home, so the Bundesliga side really ought to have exerted a level of control over the game, though that’s not what happened. They did see more of the ball, while they attempted to set the tempo, but they created little going forward, as they posted just 0.75 expected goals for. In contrast, Union Berlin were much more productive in possession, creating 1.48 expected goals for. The 2. Bundesliga also came out on top in terms of both shots and shots on target.

After their excellent efforts away from home less than a week ago, Berlin really should be feeling confident ahead of this game at Stadion An der Alten Försterei, which is where they’ve been very, very tough to beat this season. During the regular campaign, Fischer’s side lost just once at home, while they also finished the season as the 2. Bundesliga’s best home team in terms of points accumulated. Monday’s hosts also went through the season conceding less home goals than anyone else, as they surrendered an average of just 0.65 on their own patch.

Playing in the Bundesliga is obviously quite a bit tougher than playing in the second division, though Stuttgart’s travelling efforts this season certainly haven’t suggested that they’d be too good for the division that Union Berlin hope to leave behind.

On the road, Stuttgart really struggled during the regular campaign; they scored an average of just 0.59 goals, created an average of just 0.91 expected goals for, while they conceded averages of 2.53 and 1.8. Add in the fact that they created less than a positive impression when they faced Union Berlin last week and it’s not tough to see Nico Willig’s men struggling at Stadion An der Alten Försterei on Monday evening.

It’s no surprise that Union Berlin are favourites ahead of this fixture, though if we look at how well they played last time out and how they’ve generally fared at home compared to how Stuttgart have got on away from home, it’s not difficult to make a case for them being shorter in the betting. Frankly, backing Union Berlin to emerge victorious at the current prices is hard to avoid.

A bet on ‘Union Berlin to Score Over 1.5 Goals’ also catches the eye at the current prices. We’ve already seen that this side can hurt Stuttgart, who’re anything but sturdy at the back, while their overall attacking efforts at home this season bode well. Backing the hosts, who average two goals per game at home this season, to notch twice against a visiting side that struggled defensively in the first leg and that has surrendered an average of 2.53 goals away from home this season, looks to be a solid secondary option.

Head to Head

This will be just the fourth renewal of this fixture. The pair have drawn two of the previous three, while, Stuttgart won by three goals to one back in 2017.

Union Berlin Team News

Union Berlin Team Badge Fabian Schonheim remains out for the hosts, while both Felix Kroos and Christopher Trimmel are suspended. Florian Hubner returns from a ban.

Stuttgart Team News

Stuttgart Team Badge Andreas Beck is expected to miss out for Stutgart, though Santiago Ascacibar returns from suspension.
