Players Championship betting tips and predictions for the PGA Tour event from Thursday 14th March to Sunday 17th March from Stadium Course, TPC Sawgrass, Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida live on Sky Sports
Type of player suited to the challenge
Debutants are at a huge disadvantage around this track, due to its complexity and demand for course management. Straight hitters generally perform well around here, regardless of whether they are long off the tee. There is plenty of water hazards and the winning golfer is likely to be a fairly accurate fairway finder.
Dustin Johnson is the favourite here but his poor Sawgrass form of MC-79-34-57-WD-59-69-28-12-17 is enough to steer clear this week. Instead we opt for arguably the greatest iron player in the world. Tiger Woods has seriously impressed since his comeback and has recovered from his minor injury so should also be well rested for this tournament.
Tiger has no problem in leaving the driver in the bag and it’s that self control and sheer quality that stands him in great stead around a track he knows better than anyone. This course is all about patience, good strategy and control and these are qualities Woods has in abundance. The raucous atmosphere can phase many a player, but Tiger has nerves of steel and has won everything in the game so don’t expect him to feel the pressure come Sunday
This course is not one that typically suits debutants, however last year Xander excelled here on debut, firing in a final round 67 for second place. This stands the 25 year old in great stead here and it’s a course he currently only holds positive memories of.
Schauffele won the Sentry Tournament of Champions at the start of the year and has been solid on the US Tour of late with form figures of 25-10-15-14 showing he’s been right among the elite of the field every week. Xander looks the main threat to Tiger and the field this week.
Ryder Cup legend Ian Poulter has great memories here twice finishing runner up at this tournament, with his most recent runner up finish coming in 2017. Poulter has made a sensational start to 2019 and his last 5 starts have yielded form of 6-3-6-3-23. If he can get his A game out this week then Ian could stroll to victory here.
