The format for this tournament is a step up from previous event (Riga Masters) with all matches at least the best of 9 frames. Viewing the previous winners, it is usually the well established players who succeed here which is understandable with a best of 19 frame final. Looking at the draw by each quarter we can see where some of the stronger players are located.
Quarter 1 – Ding Junhui, Neil Robertson, Ali Carter, Marco Fu, Liang Wenbo & Ricky Walden.
Quarter 2 – Judd Trump, Barry Hawkins, Yan Bingtao & Luca Brecel.
Quarter 3 – Mark Selby, Ryan Day & Xaio Guodong.
Quarter 4 – Mark Williams, Kyren Wilson, Mark Allen, Stephen Maguire, Jack Lisowski, & Joe Perry.
It looks like quarter 3 will be the easiest to progress from in the draw and quarter 4 the most difficult. Three selections are given below for the outright betting market. All selections have a 100% head to head win ratio against their 1st round opponents. They also have all won ranking events previously and have plenty of experience at this event.
“The Jester from Leicester” The world number one will have a point to prove here after a disappointing world championship. The draw looks kind to him with only Ryan Day just inside the top 16 in his quarter. He is up against Elliot Slessor 1st round here who he has beat twice previously 5-0 & 4-0. Selby has reached the quarter-final or better here in 3 of the last 5 times he has entered and has a good chance to win his first ranking event of the season here.

“The Ace in the Pack” will be the third highest ranked player at the World Open with only Selby & Williams higher. Trump is coming off the back of a titanic dual in the world championship where he suffered an agonising loss 13-12 to John Higgins in the quarter-final. However he looked sharp in qualifying for this event winning 5-0 with breaks of 69, 88, 121 & 60. Martin O’ Donnell is the opening round test here, a player he holds a 4-0 head-to-head record over.
