Reason for Dallas Cowboys vs Washington Redskins Betting tips
The second game of Thanksgiving Day takes us down to AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas as the Cowboys host the Redskins in a big divisional battle. Washington currently sits on top of the NFC East standings at 6-4, but Dallas is just one game back from them with a record of 5-5. A Cowboys’ win this Thursday would bring them level with the Redskins and make the NFC playoff race even tighter as the season rolls on.
Washington will have to make its playoff run without its starting QB Alex Smith, as Smith broke his tibia and fibula this past weekend against the Texans. It was a gruesome injury that required Smith be carted off for immediate surgery at the local hospital. With him now out for the season, backup QB Colt McCoy will get the start under center.
For those who don’t know McCoy, he was a star at the University of Texas and was drafted in the 3rd round by the Cleveland Browns. McCoy has now been in the Redskins’ system for four years under HC Jay Gruden, so by no means is he a stranger to the Redskins’ offensive scheme. McCoy finished the game after Smith was carted off, and he completed half of his 12 passes for a little over 50 yards and a touchdown. But the stakes will be even higher on national TV this Thursday, so McCoy will be looking to show people why he is considered one of the better backup QBs in football.
The Cowboys will be looking to win their third straight as they return home this Thursday. Dallas won a grinder against Atlanta this past weekend courtesy of RB Ezekiel Elliot, who put the team on his back with over 200 yards of total offense and a late touchdown that proved to be the winner. The Cowboys’ defense was also impressive, as they stuffed the Falcons’ rushing attack early and were able to force a turnover out of QB Matt Ryan.
Dallas is winning games, but in all honestly they haven’t looked very impressive on the offensive side of the ball. If Elliot has a big game then the Cowboys compete, but if he has an off day then there really isn’t much the rest of the offense can hang their hat on. QB Dak Prescott is still underwhelming and the offensive line is a little banged up.
After thinking this one through, we like backing the Redskins on the point total as we think there has been a significant overreaction to McCoy taking the snaps under center. This line opened at Dallas -4.5, but with the news of McCoy starting the line quickly shifted to Dallas -7.5. Line-makers typically assign point values to starting and backup QBs in order to calculate the difference in the spread they would account for if the starter for some reason didn’t suit up. For example, the Westgate casino in Las Vegas says that if either Tom Brady or Aaron Rodgers were to be replaced by their respective backups, then there would be an 8 point change in the point spread. If you continue down the list, you would see that the point difference between Alex Smith and Colt McCoy is a whopping zero! This shows that public has drastically overreacted to McCoy starting. Alex Smith wasn’t having a great season and was being his typical game-managing self. McCoy knows the system well and has the arm talent and pocket presence to make some plays for this Redskins’ offense.
He will get some help from his defense which has been great all season, especially since acquiring S Haha Clinton-Dix from the Packers. The Redskins front seven will make life hard for Prescott and the Cowboys offense just like they did a couple weeks ago when they held Zeke to just 33 yards on the ground and held Dallas to a mere 17 points.
Because of this, we also think its worth taking a shot with the Redskins’ money line as they should keep this one close and give themselves a good shot at winning this one outright. The defenses are comparable but we feel the Washington secondary will come up with some big plays against QB Dak Prescott. We don’t trust Prescott to take care of the ball, so we are siding with the more experienced and better coached offense.
