Reason for New York Giants vs Philadelphia Eagles Betting tips
Fun fact: The New York Giants currently hold the #1 pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, yet are only 1.5 games out of first place in the NFC East. This stat shows just how crazy the beginning of the NFL season has been, and this Thursday night showdown promises to add even more to the story-line.
The opener for Week 6 action will feature one of the biggest rivalries in the NFL as the Eagles travel to New York to face the Giants. Not that this rivalry needed any more gas for the fire, but this divisional bout will have a little extra on the line being that it can really dampen the Giants’ playoff hopes. Although New York finds themselves only 1.5 games out of first place in the NFC East, this will definitely be considered a must-win game for the boys in blue, as a home loss to their hated rivals would surely be too big of a hit to their confidence.
And its expected that the Giants will come out with a little extra aggression this Thursday, after they were practically robbed of a win in Carolina this past Sunday. The officiating in the game was some of the worst you will ever see, as the Giants were screwed over on an unnecessary roughness call and didn’t get a measurement granted when it looked like Panthers’ RB Christian McCaffrey came up short on 3rd and 1. Although McCaffrey looked to be a half yard short, the officials didn’t bring out the chains to review the spot, and instead granted the Panthers a first down. Two plays later, Carolina K Graham Gano drilled a game-winning 63 yard field goal that probably would’ve gone in even from 68 yards. It was truly a heartbreaking loss for the Giants, many of which expressed their discontent with the officiating in post game interviews and on social media.
Aside from all of the controversy, the Giants showed a lot of character and fight in Carolina. They scored over 30 points for the first time since 2016 and their defense was able to pick off Newton twice. Giants’ QB Eli Manning threw 2 INTs, but also totaled over 300 yards and threw a dime on his go-ahead TD pass to RB Saquon Barkley. The Giants seemed to discover a great offensive philosophy during this past game, which was if you get the ball to your two best players, good things usually happen. What a surprise! All jokes aside, the Giants will need to get the ball into Barkley and OBJ’s hands a ton if they want to keep their season alive against one of the best defenses in the NFL.
The Eagles come into this one fresh off a home loss to the Vikings. Things did not look good for Philly, as they couldn’t get any sort of running game going and also had a lot of trouble protecting QB Carson Wentz. Wentz was under pressure all game long and wasn’t really able to get going until the second half. The Eagles’ defense played decent, but just wasn’t able to stop the Vikings’ connection between QB Kirk Cousins and QR Adam Thielen. With RB Jay Ajayi now out as well, the Eagles will hope Wendell Smallwood can handle the majority of the workload in the backfield, which is something he is not accustomed to.
With all of this considered, we think the best value for this game lies in the under for the 1st quarter points total. Both of these offenses have continuously started slow this year, as shown in the data. The Giants average only 4 points in the first quarter, which is good for 23rd in the NFL. Philly has had even less success, averaging only 1.4 1st quarter points through their first 5 games, which is the second lowest rate in the league. This includes 3 games in which the Eagles failed to score in the first quarter all together. We want to exploit this trend, as we think both offenses haven’t shown that they can come out of the gate hot.
Along with the 1st quarter under, we like the Giants to keep this one close. This is their biggest game of the season and it helps that they’ll have their home crowd behind them. Philly’s offense hasn’t been great to start the season and now it looks like they have a huge problem at running back, which will most likely cause them to become one-dimensional through the air. With their offensive line struggling and Wentz not yet finding his form from last year, we think the Giants can capitalize on this and limit the offensive potential of Philly. On the other side, the Giants should be able to take advantage of a weak Eagles’ secondary, especially with WR Odell Beckham Jr. There won’t be any Eagles’ defender capable of guarding him, so look for some big plays from OBJ to keep the Giants in it.
